The University Ranking System stimulates the quality of education in Bulgaria. It is a powerful tool for modernization of university education. This is what Mariya Fartunova, Director of University Education Directorate at the Ministry of Education, said at the presentation of the new issue of the Bulgarian University Ranking System (BURS). Associate prof. Fartunova pointed out that BURS has established itself as a powerful tool for informed choice and decision-making on the part of the university administrations.
Recently we have been observing a considerable rationalization of university admissions which is due to the informed choice of the applicants, Krasimir Valchev, the Minister of Education, added. He explained that in the last 4 years the university admissions have dropped from 65 thousand to 51 thousand. According to Minister Valchev the policies on the rationalization of university education give results: this year the ministry is not going to approve 15 professional fields in the state-funded courses of some universities.
The main trend we observe at this year’s issue of BURS is improved connection between university education and the labor market, Gerogi Stoychev, Executive Director of Open Society Institute – Sofia, said. He added that the unemployment limit among university graduates has never been below 3% before. At the same time about half of the graduates do not have jobs requiring university education. This is a structural problem, Stoychev said.

The 2017 issue of the Bulgarian University Ranking System is updated at the request of the Ministry of Education by OSI-S consortium of Open Society Institute – Sofia and Sirma Solutions in execution of contract with subject: Updating and Maintaining the Bulgarian University Ranking System for 2017.
