In response to the decision to form a temporary parliamentary committee “to establish facts and circumstances regarding the activities of George Soros and Alexander Soros and their foundations on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria” for the period since 1990, we express the following position:
We regard the decision to establish this committee as entirely unfounded and as an attempt to stigmatize civic participation in public life.
We remind that the state has a constitutional obligation to guarantee the dignity and rights of the individual and to create conditions for the free development of the individual and civil society.
The Open Society Institute – Sofia (OSIS) is an independent Bulgarian non-governmental organization operating in the public interest. It upholds the values of an open society and supports the country’s integration into the European Union. In its work, the foundation is guided by its mission and applicable laws and publishes an annual activity report.
Founded in 1990 in the early months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Open Society Institute – Sofia has actively supported the transformation of Bulgaria from a closed totalitarian state into an open democratic society.
Throughout its 35-year existence, the foundation has supported—and continues to support—the causes of hundreds of civil society organizations that contribute to informed civic participation, freedom of speech, media literacy, the protection of fundamental civil rights and freedoms, the inclusion of vulnerable communities, good governance, and the rule of law.
