The MediaResilience project aims at strengthening a free, diverse, and pluralistic news media landscape and promoting quality journalism with emphasis on enhancing quality media outreach to the most vulnerable groups in society susceptible to disinformation. The project focuses on EU countries facing multiple vulnerabilities related to media freedom, the quality of democracy, and resilience to disinformation: Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, and Slovenia.
The project includes two primary components: 1) a funding scheme for media entities, and investigative journalism, and 2) capacity building to enhance knowledge and skills for promoting democracy and civic engagement in an increasingly challenging media landscape, shaped by technological, economic, and legal changes.
The main target groups for re-granting and capacity-building are independent media entities dedicated to promoting democracy, pluralism, social inclusion, human rights, media literacy, intercultural dialogue, and EU values, while holding decision-makers accountable.
Additionally, the project will inform and engage stakeholders and key audiences in the selected countries and across the EU about its results, knowledge gained, and lessons learned, fostering collaboration and shared learning through a repository of case studies and best practices.
Approximately 30 media organizations will receive direct support of up to 60,000 EUR each. At least 10% of the project’s re-granting budget will be allocated to investigative journalism, and a minimum of 30% will support local, regional, and community media addressing critical democratic issues. Through communication and dissemination activities, project outcomes will be shared with up to 300 journalists and more than 400 event participants.
Overall, the project aims to empower target groups to resist fake news, enhance access to quality journalism and information, restore and increase trust in the media, and contribute to reducing polarization in society, thus facilitating social inclusion and intercultural understanding.
The MediaResilience project is led by the Open Society Institute – Sofia (OSIS) and implemented in cooperation with the European Citizen Action Service (ECAS) and ProMedia.
The project, which started on October 1st, 2024 and will be completed on September 30th, 2026, is co-funded by the EU through the Creative Europe Programme (CREA) (Grant Number 101180135) with an amount of 2 million euros.
