Top 10 Higher Education Institutions in Bulgaria by H-Index

The Hirsch citation index or h-index is a measure of both quality and quantity of science and research activity of research organizations (eg research centers, universities, etc.), as well as of individual scientists. If a university has h-index equal to 10, it means that the university has 10 research publications cited at least 10 times each. Among all Bulgarian higher education institutions (HEIs), Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” ranks first with h-index for the research documents published within the 5-year period 2015-2019 equal to 68 according to data from the international database Scopus and h-index equal to 65 according to the international database Web of Science, presented in the Bulgarian University Ranking System edition for 2020. After Sofia University the medical universities in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna are ranked. The only private university that is ranked among the top 10 Bulgarian HEIs by citation index is New Bulgarian University in Sofia. Generally, if we look at the research publications for the 5-year period 2015-2019 of all 52 Bulgarian HEIs taken together, the h-index of the Bulgarian higher education system is equal to 89 in Scopus and 88 in Web of Science.
